Happy Trails...

Greeting from the President

Every summer I think the heat and humidity can’t get any worse, but this summer was brutal! The fall weather seemed to appear suddenly, but I am so glad it is here, time to really start hitting the trail for some great runs!  I hope everyone is taking advantage and getting in lots of great training for all the fall marathons and ultras.

More GUTS gear is now available. We have some great gear ready for you and for the cooler weather. Check this issue for more details on how to order your gear or pick some up at the next GUTS event. Pumpkin Butt is just a couple weeks away – do you have a pumpkin picked out?  Come join us for five loops over the mountain and a lot of fun. Winners receive a North Face base camp duffel and a homemade pumpkin pie. Entry is just $5 (and a pumpkin).  And it will be great training for Pine Mountain, which is just over a month away.

As daylight savings time approaches please remember to be safe out there. Dig into your closet and make sure you have a good reflector vest. And you’ll need a good headlamp if you want to join us on Tuesday nights, starting the 2nd week of November we will then begin our practice of running trails at night. And we will continue to have the first Tuesday of each month designated for GUTS beer & pizza night. We look forward to more members joining us for the weekly night runs.

Happy Trails,
Janice Anderson, Prez

Hot to Trot 8 Hour Run

The weather for the 2011 Hot to Trot was perfect ... at least if you were the Race Director or weren't running the race! A cool, misty overcast morning, with 94% humidity, led into a hot afternoon with a heat index of 101˚. Jim Bickelhaupt & Kate Brun emerged as the 2011 Hottest Male & Female runners with 50.74 miles and 43.66 miles, respectively. But 2011 will forever be known as the Year of the Yellow Jackets. Another one in the books. Thanks to ALL who helped make this one FANTASTIC! Well, except for the yellow jackets.

Save the Date
- GUTS End of Year Party

Sunday, December 11th, 5pm

You will get an email invite next month, but save December 11th for this year’s GUTS annual member meeting and party.  This year’s party will again be at the house of the current Prez and the home of Pumpkin Butt and FatAss 50K. If you need directions though, don’t be afraid to ask!

As it is each year, the party also serves as the official yearly meeting of GUTS members. This year we will hold elections for Vice President, Secretary and Treasurer.  Incumbents Sally Brooking, Kim Pike, and Debbi Legg respectively, will be running for re-election. Each elected position has a 2-year term.  Nominations will be sent to the membership at least two weeks prior to the meeting, but nominations are also allowed “from the floor” on the day of the meeting. If you are interested in a position please email with the subject line “Nominations” to getguts@hotmail.com.

Finally – GUTS will be supplying the catering as well as non-alcoholic beverages.  You need only bring your favorite adult beverage, if you are so inclined. We’d love to see some of you in your street clothes (vs sweaty running gear), so please plan on attending.  Send any questions with the subject line “Time to Party” to getguts@hotmail.com

Seeking Nominations for Outstanding Volunteers!!

Help GUTS honor some of our members for dedicated service to the club! We are thrilled about presenting the 2011 Outstanding Volunteer Awards at our End-of-Year celebration in December. We love to recognize the volunteers who show outstanding commitment to the running community. Do you know someone who:

  1. Has a way of handing out aid station chow like a pro?
  2. Is always at GUTS races bright & early to help the RD's?
  3. Brings to mind a great story where you just couldn't get through a race without them?
  4. Is a familiar face when you cross the finish line and you know they were instrumental in helping GUTS put on a great race?
  5. Makes the best post-race food you have ever tasted?
  6. Is good with a hacksaw and axe? (ok so this is just a nice referral for the RD's!)

It's super simple to nominate your favorite volunteer. Please email newsletter@getguts.com with a few sentences telling us why a certain someone should get a special award! If you see their beaming face in December, you'll be glad you did!

Previous winners include:

2010: Kirsten Nash, John Mollenheur & Mark Elson
2009: Tom Wilson, Jamie Slafkosky, Tony Gonzalez
2008: Wes Breeding, Jamie Slafkosky, Jason Rockman, Steve Freemerman, Jane de Albuquerque

GUTS Love

From Rachel and James Rockwell

"As James and I were going to sleep the other night, he said 'Good Night my Pumpkin Butt.' I responded with 'Good Night my Fat Ass.'"

Only a GUTS couple could share this true love and pet names!
